Last week we told you that Paul Mescal is a proper Hollywood guy now. All gorgeous, big brand get-ups such as cheap Cartier replica watches to match the impeccable manners. Well, we weren’t wrong. As he showed us at the Oscars. Wait, correction. As he won the Oscars 2023.
And sure, you sit there puzzled, Mescal didn’t actually take home a physical award. But he did secure the title for the best-dressed guy on the night. No big deal: just a Normal lad beating out the entirety of Hollywood and beyond.
Mescal walked the champagne carpet with movie-star magnetism. It was his first Oscars, though surely not his last. He didn’t know if he was going to win (he likely had his doubts), but he showed up and turned one out for the books. Wearing a custom Gucci tuxedo, Mescal was worlds away from the County Kildare guy wearing five-inch seamers.
The look comprised an ivory tuxedo jacket, which fell slightly longer at the hips and had fanged-out satin lapels, and a pair of über kick-flared trousers with massive rolled-up hems. A proper dickie bow tie. It was Old Hollywood glamour on heat. It was an expert-level fit. The styling team even told us prior to the awards that they were slightly nervous about the reaction the outfit would get. Please! No place for nerves here. Mescal won.
“Paul’s suit is inspired by his love of old Hollywood with the white double-breasted satin lapel Gucci jacket and red silk corsage,” stylist Felicity Kay tells GQ. “The silk shirt is so fine it’s translucent, and beautifully contrasts with the structure of the wool trousers.”
It’s the fact that every last detail is right on the money. The Cartier Juste un Clou hoop earring offset the classiness of the overall vibe; the diamond floral brooch (also Cartier) to compliment the red corsage; and then arguably the piece de resistance, the perfect UK replica Cartier Privé Tank Chinoise watches. The Oscars is a funny thing. Historical, the most esteemed awards ceremony, well ever. Slightly rigid when it comes to dressing codes, but still you get the odd left-fielder (Crocs on the carpet? You decide). But not Mescal. He gave us a fit that played nicely into the awards’ 95-year-old rule book of formality, but was also subtly playful. It was a lesson in statement dressing, without screaming for attention. It had the wisdom of a guy who’s walked the carpet a hundred times. It was sensitive, but also powerful. The rose was verging on silly. But it worked. His huge flares were almost cartoonish in form, but again, they passed. He kept his mullet. Confidence! Fun!
